What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a web feed format that delivers frequently updated content like news, blog posts, or podcasts in a standardized, computer-readable way. It's an easy way for you to keep up with news and information that's important to you, and helps you avoid the conventional methods of browsing or searching for information on websites. An RSS feed contains headlines, summaries, dates, and links, acting like a digital newspaper delivery for your favorite sites. Now the content you want can be delivered directly to you without cluttering your inbox with e-mail messages. This content is called a "feed."
RSS is written in the Internet coding language known as XML (eXtensible Markup Language).
How it works
- Publisher creates: A website creates an RSS feed (an XML file) with links and summaries of new content.
- User subscribes: You add this feed to an RSS reader (like a browser extension or app).
- Reader checks: The reader automatically checks the feed for new items.
- Content delivered: When new content is published, it appears in your reader as a notification or item, often with a link to the full article.
What Is an RSS Reader?
An RSS reader is a small software program that collects and displays RSS feeds. It allows you to scan headlines from a number of news sources in a central location.
Common uses
- Reading news and blog updates.
- Subscribing to new podcast episodes.
- Monitoring brand mentions or industry news
