Public Notice for Reappointment of Incumbent Magistrate Judge

PUBLIC NOTICE FOR REAPPOINTMENT OF
INCUMBENT MAGISTRATE JUDGE

The current term of office of United States Magistrate Judge Heather L. Kennedy, at the District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands, is due to expire on June 10, 2017. The United States District Court is required by law to establish a panel of citizens to consider the reappointment of the magistrate judge to a new four-year term.

The duties of a magistrate judge in this court include the following: (1) conducting preliminary proceedings in criminal cases; (2) trying and disposing of misdemeanor cases; (3) conducting various pretrial matters and evidentiary proceedings delegated by the District Judge; and (4) trying and disposing of civil cases upon consent of the litigants. The basic jurisdiction of a United States Magistrate Judge is described in 28 U.S.C. § 636.

Written comments from members of the bar and the public are invited as to whether the incumbent magistrate judge should be recommended by the panel for reappointment by the court. Comments must be received by November 7, 2016. Send written comments to:
