PURPOSE
The District Courts of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, in partnership with the Guam and CNMI Bar Associations, are pleased to host a virtual and inperson Bankruptcy Seminar Series. This Bankruptcy Seminar Series will expose our federal and local bar members to current bankruptcy issues where attendees will receive updated case law and information.

VIRTUAL SEMINAR PART 3
“Business Bankruptcy Issues During the Pandemic”

This third virtual seminar is a continuation of the second virtual seminar with a focus on “Business Bankruptcy Issues During the Pandemic,” designed to provide information to Guam and the NMI’s federal and local bar members. Key topics will include PPP legislative and forgiveness issues, Chapter 7, 11 and 13 bankruptcies, employee issues focusing on wages, benefits and retirement accounts, liability of debtors in possession under the WARN Act, unexpired lease and executory contract issues in COVID Times, preference issues, and opportunities in bankruptcy including automatic stays, commercial landlords acquiring their tenants, executive bonuses and restructuring under secured obligations in bankruptcy.

The Honorable Judge Daniel P. Collins is a Bankruptcy Judge for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Arizona. Judge Collins was appointed as a bankruptcy judge on January 18, 2013 and served as Chief Judge from 2014 to 2018. He is currently a member of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, American Bankruptcy Institute, Arizona Bankruptcy American Inns of Court, Federal Bar Association, National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees, State Bar of Arizona and the Maricopa County Bar. Previously, he was a partner with the Law Firm of Collins, May, Potenza, Baran & Gillespie, P.C., in Phoenix, Arizona, specializing in the practice areas of bankruptcy, commercial litigation and commercial transactions. Judge Collins served on the State Bar of Arizona’s Subcommittee on the Uniform Fraudulent Transfer Act and chaired the Bankruptcy Section of the State of Arizona from 1995- 1996.

Misty Perry Isaacson, Esq. is an attorney for Pagter and Perry Isaacson, APLC, a Bankruptcy firm in Santa Ana, California. Isaacson focuses her practice on bankruptcy and insolvency matters and is a Certified Bankruptcy Specialist, certified by the State Bar of California. Isaacson received her law degree from Southwestern University School of Law and is admitted to practice before the United States District and Bankruptcy Courts for the Southern, Central, Eastern and Northern Districts of California and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Her representation also includes Trustees, debtors and creditors in Chapter 7, 11, 12, and 13 bankruptcy cases and adversary actions. Isaacson is currently the Chair Elect for the Ninth Circuit Lawyer Representatives Coordinating Committee, Former Co-Chair of the Central District of California Lawyer Representatives to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference, serves on the Insolvency Law Committee for the Business Law Section of the State Bar of California, is a board member for the Central District of California’s Attorney Admission Fund, a member of the Orange County Bankruptcy Forum and the Orange County Commercial Law and Bankruptcy Section. She is also the recipient of the Honorable William J. Lasarow Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Service to the Community.

Alika L. Piper, Esq., an attorney for Klevansky Piper, LLP, a law firm in Honolulu, Hawaii, emphasizes her practice in business litigation, business bankruptcy law, creditors’ rights and collections. Piper graduated from the University of Hawaii, William S. Richardson School of Law in 1997 and is admitted to practice in all courts of the State of Hawaii and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. She has served as Treasurer, Finance Committee Chair, and Board Member of the Hawaii State Bar Association. She has been listed in Hawaii Super Lawyers® Magazine since 2008 and is also listed in Chambers and Partners USA Guide as a leading lawyer in Bankruptcy/Restructuring in Hawaii. Piper is experienced in representing clients in litigation, arbitration, bankruptcy and out-of-court workouts.

Tiffany Payne Geyer, Esq., Partner of Baker Hostetler law firm in Orlando, Florida, practices primarily in the areas of bankruptcy and creditors' rights. Geyer graduated at the University of Florida Levin College of Law in 2000 and has been featured in Chamber USA: Bankruptcy/Restructuring in Florida from 2014 to 2020 and The Best Lawyers in America© in 2020. As a Florida “Super Lawyer”, she has represented both corporate and individual debtors in Chapter 11 cases, and individuals in Chapter 7 cases. Her clients include healthcare businesses and medical professionals, investment bankers and financial advisors. She has also represented clients in the hospitality sectors and has assisted in representing debtors in the energy sectors. Geyer has negotiated multiple settlements of guarantor liability and has experience with assignments for the benefit of creditors. She has also represented secured creditors, unsecured creditors, landlords and panel trustees.

Virtual Bankruptcy Seminar 3 is open to Guam and CNMI bar members. You must register with the CNMI Bar Association to attend this third seminar.

  • Continuing Legal Education Credits (CLE): Seminar 3- Two (2) general credits
